Paragon Builders Designer and Builder Jim Ummel

Have you ever been inside a home that seems to flow around you like fine music- a home where diffused light enhances angles that usually remain unseen? If not, you will have the experience when visiting a home designed and built by Jim Ummel of Paragon Builders.  Jim Ummel creates truly custom homes for the discriminating consumer.

Born in Pueblo, CO, Jim Ummel studied music and violin at Boston University and the Manhattan School of Music in New York.  Trained as a classical violinist, Jim performed for years with the symphony orchestras in the winter season and came to play with the Santa Fe Opera in the summers. In 1981, Jim moved permanently to Santa Fe and began remodeling with a local real estate firm. Paragon Builders was incorporated in 1984.

Paragon Builders initially concentrated on custom homes in Eldorado along with remodels and additions to new and historic homes on the east side of Santa Fe. Jim Ummel quickly achieved recognition for quality and value, leading to the premier custom home building side of Paragon Builders. Jim's success can be readily acknowledged by a long list of awards (since 1991) associated with the Santa Fe Haciendas Parade of Homes.

Paragon Builders homes are designed to be livable and comfortable for the owner. Jim indicates, "Establishing an attitude of working together is very important.  I want people to enjoy the entire process of building a home.  Spontaneous changes to plans and details, as necessary, add immeasurably to the client's overall satisfaction." Adding a frosted skylight here or a designer glass there enhances the feeling of warmth and comfort by using light to create an almost musical effect highlighting angles and arches and providing the inner glow which makes the home truly unique.

Jim Ummel designs and builds two or more custom homes annually.  Custom additions and/or custom-designed remodels are a major part of Paragon Builders' business.  However, Jim notes that he also works with and builds from the plans of other designers and architects.  Since 1996, able subcontractors have worked with Paragon Builders to perform the major structural construction process, leaving Jim more time to oversee each project and concentrate, in house, on those finishing touches and unique design enhancements. Jim Ummel is onsite daily, at each project, to ensure craftsmanship and designs that flow with the client's vision of their custom home, addition or remodel.  When asked what sets his company apart, Jim unequivocally states, "Quality and integrity- I am a real perfectionist."

Jim serves the Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association as first vice president for 2000. He chairs the Haciendas Parade of Homes committee for the year 2000, exhibiting his strong belief in the benefits attained through participation in the HBA.  Jim believes that as active members of the local, state, and national levels of the HBA, builders are influential in making home ownership a reality to all Americans.  Jim Ummel will serve as president of the Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association in the year 2001.

Paragon Builders associates can be proud of the professional dedication of their founder and the projects it completes. Jim is supported by his partner, Penny Dickerson, who in her own right, heads a successful mortgage company, Dickerson Funding, adding to the mix that encourages Jim to continue his art of designing and building creations of art.
